Along U.S. 12 in Detroit

Hello! Unsure if anyone stops by here as it's been ages since my last post. I'm going to try to keep it up on a more regular basis as I have loads of images that are sitting on my desktop. Trying to decide where to focus my posting efforts, here on blogger, tumblr 1, tumblr 2, flickr... Ideally it will all be consolidated all on a website soon.

This post represents a mini inventory of signs and ephemera along U.S. 12 also known as Michigan Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. See more here and the actual photos on my flickr. Explanation to come!

meet, eat and support!

Powderhorn Empty Bowls: One of my favorite events of the year and one that i'm involved with on many levels. If you're in the Minneapolis area you've got to attend. Here's the jist: select from a amazing array of handmade bowls made by local artists and craftspeople, fill with hearty homemade soup/bread, meet your neighbors + make a freewill contribution (you get to keep your bowl)! Donations support the foodshelf at the Division of Indian Work, Sister's Camelot and upgrading Powderhorn Park RecCenter's kitchen. So many levels of awesomeness! i'd love to see you there.

Notes:
If you'd like to volunteer making soup, serving, donating materials, etc. email Monica at monicakmcdaniel@gmail.com

I checked the emptybowl website and it appears to be corrupt, see the flyer for date, time and details.

Documents from travels past. I love the unpredictability of the real print, chemical mixing, waiting…

more blurriness here.

I'm ready for a great roadtrip.

appreciation

-------------------------------------------------------

Hello out there!

I was stalling on this five-hundredth post — planning to create something monumental. To keep things moving, let's make due with the most magnificent magnolia tree EVER, a cobbled sequence of summerfun, AND little a give-away.

To those who peek here — thanks so much for visiting. I'd like to express my gratitude by giving away a handful of posters. Just leave a comment by Friday morning and note which one you'd like > select from the minimini thumbnails 1 – 12. The posters look quite nice in kid and baby rooms as they're high contrast. Size is 28 x 36 inches. I'll draw five names.
again thanks so much for commenting and stopping by!

has anyone entered one of these here r-a-f-f-l-e-s?

We ♥ L.S.F.

I've been carving rubberstamps and making potential kit components, which may become something for my new pals at laughing stalk farmstead. They've got a limited print budget, so rubberstamps seem to be the best option for creating the most variations.

02.02.10 is groundhogs day

Sample exercises from the letterpress class I'm taking——OH, the possibilities of handset type + handinking!!! I was quite excited to print a few sheets of stationary commemorating groundhog's day and my kiddo's third birthday.

simpleshapes

Simple shapes lead to endless possibilities! We've been playing with this pegboard game from Playskool.

Which makes me think of these villages that I built while I was in Estonia number of years ago.

letraset portraits

On the first day of class, I have my students fill out index cards with pertinent course info, and on the reverse side they make typographic portraits using letraset——so that I can recall their names. I made these three, while they eased back in and acclimated themselves with type. Here are some great student examples from last year.
