localtrip 2 and 3: camping!

We tried out two state parks in one week—both were new to me and much closer than the north shore.

The first was Afton State Park, where we hiked in a couple miles to our camping site. We lugged in a ridiculous amount of stuff for just one night and were completely secluded from other humans which was quite magical. We sawed our own wood, were harassed by raccoons, serenaded all night long by wild turkeys, whip-poor-wills, and woodpeckers——don't know if a full moon means active animals??? next morning we hiked to our own private beach on the St. Croix river for some good swimming.

The second trip was e a s y camping (don't know if camping is even the right word). We drove up north——the moment before you reach Superior) to Jay Cooke State Park situated on the big and broad St. Louis river. There we stayed in an amazing log cabin which was fairly new and well crafted. I had a bit of cabin envy as there was a really great one (Slate cabin) which butted up against a huge rock wall and was a bit more private. Next day, we drove to Duluth, swam in the mighty Lake and ate at one of our favorite restaurants called the New Scenic Cafe. Yum, the tempeh reuben is crazy good.

Lucky us, no mosquitoes on both ventures!

localtrip 1: the guthrie

We carved out three-weeks to go to Wales; and since we were unable to go at the last minute, we found ourselves with a chunk of time. a rare opportunity! We've taken a handful of mini-excursions to local venues — our first, to one of our favorites—the Guthrie. To occupy the space during the day, when there is barely anyone around, is particularly incredible.

hello again

school has let out and summer vacation is in full-swing. Even though my blog was hiatus, I've been following yours——thankyou!

I had blocked out three weeks to go to england/wales but turns out we couldn't go due to an expired passport; discovered the night before our planned departure. BOOOOOOOhoooooo! it was a mighty blowpop—we moped around a few days—but morale is now topnotch.

some preoccupations as of late:
__ short escapes: we've been camping 2x and hanging out with nature.
__g a r d e n i n g !
__working with Ms. Annie on website
__excited for a future fence designed by ro/lu !
__lingering way too long on craigslist, namely in the following: houseswaps, vacation rental and farm/garden. I've yet to make any purchases.
__devising master escape to maine
__working on mini—but fulfilling freelance projects.
__beginning advanced letterpress tomorrow
__and the outdoor pool is open for lapswim!

lineage

Happy Mother's Day Mum's!
The day was perfect here: a family fun day PLUS some solo time in my garden. We spent the morning with my sister (Jen's a new mom), ate an obnoxious amount of food, rearranged my garden. Our fine friends (Erik and Beth—not the squirrel) even did a drop by with flowers!

special folder of fun

As my semester winds down and the computer cleanup begins—special things have been re-discovered on my harddrive. These four images are amongst many in my "Anti-Hierarchy/Excess" folder.

> MAX / Dishes. Minneapolis!
> Yikes, my parents have been holding these for my sister me. I don't remember being doll crazy?
> Gas + Jerky! Taken in northern michigan ?
> Crazytown exhibit at the MN state fair. One of my favorite case studies in what not to do.

young rats

A little Calder and a couple spreads from Three Young Rats by Alexander Calder. Just all around awesome!

The book was first published in 1944 in an edition of 60 copies with an original drawing & signed by Calder as well as an edition of 700 copies. I recently purchased a 2nd edition published by Museum of Modern Art, 1946.

Scans are from my book and photographs found here and here.
